Poomsae / Forms

LEGAL FORM
Legal Form is any form that is a requirment needed to perform to advance in a martial arts program. These would be forms such as the Taeguk Poomsae, Koryo, Pyongwon, Jitae and others.

FREE STYLE FORMS (*ONLY allowed at certain times of year)
  • Any form that is created by the competitor.
  • This style can be performs as a an Individual, a Pair or any group containing no more than five (5) members.
  • Music must NOT contain lyrics or contain any political, social, or religious content.
  • Time Limit 90 to 100 sec

PRESENTATION
All competitors must present themselves to the Judges BEFORE they perform their Poomsae/Form/Pattern.
HOW TO PRESENT
When name is called competitors will stand up, yell “Sir” Or “Ma’ma”. They can turn around and adjust their uniform (front nad back) and their belt.
Competitors will RUN up to the Judges and can say some form of the following.
“Judges, my name is ________Insert Name__________. I am from ______Insert School Name_. The Pattern I would like to perform is _________Insert Pattern Name___. Judges!”

Judges will then have competitors step back several steps. The command of “Junbi” (Ready Stance) will be given. Competitors will then be told to “Begin when ready.” by the Judges.

When Finished with their Form, competitors will hold their last motion until the Judges give the command to either stop/ relax/ or back to Junbi. Competitors will then be asked to turn around so that the judges can give their score to the score keeper and the audience.

SCORING
All Scoring will be done on a decimal based scoring system which will be between 5.0 - 9.9. The head judge will announce “JUDGES FIRST SCORE” and all judages will hold up their hands to give the WHOLE number. The head judge will then announce “JUDGES SECOND SCORE” and all judges will hold up their hands to give the DECIMAL number.

After that the Head Judge will tell the competitor to turn around, thank them and they may have a seat.

*If a competitor makes a mistake, that competitor CAN NOT win.

SCORING (HEAD TO HEAD)
Performance:
  • Two athletes, one designated as Red and the other as Blue, perform their respective Poomsae (form) for their belt rank simultaneously.
  • Both athletes perform the form according to the requirements of their rank (e.g., a white belt performing a basic form, a black belt performing more advanced forms).
  • Judges assess the athletes based on their performance of the form, including technical execution, precision, power, balance, and focus.
Judging Criteria:
  • Accuracy of movements: Correct technique and precision of each movement.
  • Power: The strength of strikes, blocks, and transitions.
  • Balance: Proper stance and posture throughout the performance.
  • Fluidity: Smoothness and continuity of the form.
  • Spirit: Focus, attitude, and intensity shown during the performance.
Flag Decision:
  • After both athletes complete their Poomsae, the judges will raise flags to indicate which athlete they believe performed the best:
    • Red Flag: Raised for the Red Athlete if they are judged to have executed the form better.
    • Blue Flag: Raised for the Blue Athlete if they are judged to have executed the form better.
Winner Determination:
  • The athlete who receives 2 out of 3 flags (the majority of the judges' votes) is declared the winner for that round.
